Solutions to Urban Wood Waste including The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB)
Sawmill Sid is pleased to present an innovative solution for the Wood Waste from Ontario’s Ash Trees that have been affected by the EAB. Our research has determined that Ontario currently has in the 10’s of millions Ash Trees that are either dead or dying due to the EAB. Ontario is now faced by the die off of ash trees due to the Emerald Ash Borer and that the nearly all of Ontario’s Ash trees will die in the next 2 to 6 years due to this invasive pest. Further, there may be as many as 2,000,00 urban wood trees currently in storage, and that 1,000,000 to 2,000,000 trees are fallen per annum for development and from storms. We believe that by Re-Purposing Wood presents viable, sustainable economic opportunities for the urban wood crisis, but also provides Ontario with an environmental solution.Urban wood is a timely consideration because municipalities are increasingly challenged with managing their wood waste. This crisis can be turned into a unique opportunity for sustainable tree removal and urban wood repurposing that goes beyond creating wood chips and mulch and brings value back to the community through harvesting of trees that are already dead. We are aware of many different markets for processed wood and markets for the sawdust. We believe that the time is right for a Wood Re-Purposing Facility in Greater Toronto and that Sawmill Sid is uniquely positioned to successfully reclaim these trees, reduce waste and leave less of a carbon footprint.
Having duly examined the Urban Wood Industry in Ontario, we are confident that our current portable sawmilling services can effectively address Ontario’s needs. Our goal is to reclaim Toronto’s trees by providing Portable Sawmilling and partnering with current Wood Processing Services to re-purposing this wood for lumber, siding, flooring, wood for artisans and for furniture, and then re-use the sawdust for the biomass industry and for animal bedding. The Facility along with the services of many community partners will demonstrate an innovative business model, will be sustainable, will attract investment, will create jobs and will be at little to no cost to the Municipalities of the GTA.
Portable sawmilling in this province is by its nature are traditionally very small enterprises or for the hobbyist. Our unique ability to handle large capacity and small projects, experience in the public sector and having portable sawmills available to the Ontario market, along with our successful track record in sawmilling reclaimed timber and our recent project of sawmilling the “Maple Leaf Forever Tree” makes us your “go to” portable sawyer. We are Ontario Wood Certified by the Ministry of Natural Resources and also partner with organizations and business like Roca, LEAF, The Brothers Dressler and The Ministry of Natural Resources. We have been an advocate of Re-Purposing since inception and had the opportunity to take part in the round table discussions on many of Toronto’s Urban Wood problems. We also had the opportunity to mill up the “Maple Leaf Forever Tree” recently at the Brickworks. We look forward to forming a mutually rewarding relationship with all the municipalities in Ontario.
